Best Places to Travel in December 2026 From Qatar

Ask anyone who works at a travel desk in Doha what November feels like and they’ll laugh.

It’s the month the WhatsApp messages start. “Bro, any place for December?” “Can we still get a Europe visa?” “My wife wants snow. Help.” Some of those people end up on a mountain in Georgia three weeks later. Some end up staying home, mostly because they waited one week too long on the visa.

And the funny part is that December is when Doha is at its best. Cool evenings. Picnics in Aspire Park. The Corniche packed after Maghrib, then National Day on the 18th, when every car and balcony goes maroon and white. Leaving almost feels rude.

But the school break is the school break, and if you’re going to go, go somewhere that’s actually good in December. Here’s where we’d send you this year.

The short answer: for snow, Georgia or Finnish Lapland. For winter markets and long coffee breaks, Vienna. For beaches, the Maldives, Phuket and Krabi, or Sri Lanka’s south coast. Start any Schengen visa early. And if your passport makes visas painful, the Maldives gives every nationality a free 30-day visa on arrival.

Why is December a tricky month to book from Qatar?

Everybody moves at once. That’s really it.

Families here are travelling for the break. Half of Europe is heading for the mountains, and a big chunk of Asia is flying home. So the same few weeks get squeezed from every direction, and it shows up first in the rooms in Gudauri and Rovaniemi, then in flight times, then (the painful bit) in Schengen appointments.

There’s one fact we wish more people knew. The Swiss consulate’s guidance for applicants in Qatar says a Schengen application can go in up to six months before travel. Six whole months. Most December files we handle still come in during November.

Where should you travel in December from Qatar?

1. Georgia snow that’s a short flight away

Georgia is where a lot of people from Qatar see snow for the first time, and it’s a good place for it.

Gudauri is the main ski resort. It’s about 120 km from Tbilisi, the season starts in December and goes on until roughly mid-April, and the top lift reaches 3,276 metres. That last number matters more than it sounds. Early in December the lower slopes can be a bit bare, but up top it’s usually proper winter already.

You don’t have to ski, by the way. Plenty of our travellers never touch a pair of skis. They do Tbilisi properly instead, the crooked old streets, the sulphur baths, a slightly ridiculous amount of khachapuri, and then drive up to the mountains for a day just to throw snowballs at each other.

Now the boring but important part. Since 16 May 2026, citizens of 17 countries (Pakistan and Bangladesh are two of them) need a GCC residence permit with at least one year of validity left on arrival to use the visa-free route. Officers at the border do check. So before you book anything, look at your QID and see when it expires.

2. Lapland, Finland: for the northern lights

We’ll be upfront. Lapland in December is extreme.

Rovaniemi gets about two and a half hours of daylight a day. Around the 21st, the sun simply doesn’t come up. Most days hover somewhere between minus 10 and minus 20, which, if you’ve just left a Doha December, is a bit of a shock to the lungs.

And yet people come back from it glowing. It’s the darkness that makes the northern lights possible (they can appear any time from November to April), the snow is about as reliable as snow gets, and the town is the official hometown of Santa Claus. Kids lose their minds. Adults, quietly, do too.

Please don’t spend a fortune on Arctic gear in a Doha mall. Most tour operators up there rent out the heavy jackets and boots. Finland is Schengen, so if your passport needs a Schengen visa, this trip needs planning early.

3. Vienna: winter markets and old coffee houses

Vienna is what people imagine when they imagine a European December. Fairy lights over narrow streets, wooden huts selling roasted chestnuts, and coffee houses where nobody rushes you out.

One warning. Lots of the markets close on 23 December: Freyung, Am Hof, Karlsplatz and Spittelberg all pack up that day. Schönbrunn Palace keeps its market going into January, so head there if you’re travelling over New Year.

Early December is nicer anyway. Fewer people, easier tables.

4. Maldives: the easiest visa on this list

The Maldives moves into its dry season in December, so the sea is calmer and the water is clear enough to see the fish from the jetty.

But honestly, the best thing about the Maldives in December is how little paperwork it needs. Every nationality gets a free 30-day visa when they land. What you do need is simple enough:

a return or onward ticket within 30 days

a confirmed booking, or enough money for the stay

a passport with at least a month left on it

If your usual Europe visa experience involves three weeks of chasing documents, this is a very welcome change.

5. Southern Thailand: pick the right coast

Here’s a mistake we see every single year. Someone books “Thailand in December”, picks an island because a friend posted it on Instagram, and spends half the trip watching rain.

Thailand has two coasts. The Andaman side, which means Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta, is dry and sunny in December. Koh Samui is on the Gulf side, where the rain can drag on a little longer.

So it’s Phuket or Krabi for the beach. Tack on a couple of days in Bangkok if you like, since December is one of the more bearable months there. Thai entry rules change a lot depending on your passport, so check yours first.

6. Sri Lanka’s south coast

Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts come alive in December. The waves around Galle, Mirissa and Bentota calm down, and the whale-watching boats in Mirissa start going out again.

If you only do one thing, do Galle Fort in the late afternoon. The old walls turn gold, the breeze comes in off the sea, and there’s almost always a cricket game happening on the grass below. Entry rules depend on nationality, so get yours confirmed early.

Do you need a tourist visa agency in Qatar for a December trip?

For the Maldives, not really.

For Finland, Austria or anywhere else in Schengen, it’s a different conversation, and that’s where a good tourist visa agency in Qatar earns its keep. December appointments are scarce, and one wrong document can push you straight past your flight.

What goes wrong is rarely dramatic. It’s usually things like hotel dates that don’t match the flights, travel insurance that ends a day early, a bank statement that looks a bit odd, or a QID that’s about to run out. Small stuff, all of it. Expensive stuff, when it’s December.

No agency can approve a visa, and anyone who promises you one is not being straight with you. The embassy decides. What we can do is make sure your file isn’t the reason it says no.

Is a Qatar international tour package worth it in December?

Most of the time, yes.

A Qatar international tour package bundles your flights, hotel and transfers into one booking. In a quiet month that’s convenient. In December it’s protection, because it stops the classic disaster where the hotel is paid and the flight you wanted is suddenly gone.

Travelling early in the month with flexible dates? Booking it yourself is fine. Locked into the school break or the National Day holiday? Let one team hold the flights, the rooms and the visa timeline together.

Ready to plan your December trip?

If there’s one thing to take away, it’s the order. Decide what kind of trip you want first. Snow, a city, or a beach. Start the visa straight after that. Flights and hotels come last. We’ve watched too many people do it backwards and spend the holiday at home with a hotel booking they couldn’t use.

Thinking about Georgia, Lapland, Vienna or the Maldives this December? Reach out to the team at RAG Tours and Travels. We’ll check your visa options, plan your Qatar international tour and handle all the bookings, so the only job left for you is packing.
