France appears as €65 per day on one site and €120 on another. Germany shows up as €45, €70, and €120 depending on where you look. Spain gets quoted at €90, €100, €113 and €122. All of these sources present their numbers as settled fact.

They’re not all wrong. They’re describing a system that genuinely doesn’t have one answer, and the confusion causes real problems for applicants who pick a number, hit it exactly, and get refused anyway.

Here’s how the requirement actually works.

There Is No Single Schengen Figure

The Schengen Area has 29 member states and each one sets its own financial reference amount. These are published by member states and compiled in Annex 25 of the Visa Code Practical Handbook, which is the closest thing to an authoritative source.

The spread is enormous. Latvia’s official reference amount sits at around €14 per day. France publishes roughly €120 per day, dropping to about €65 if accommodation is already paid for. Switzerland is around €100. The Netherlands sits in the middle. Poland is closer to €18.

So the first thing to establish is which country you’re actually applying to, because the answer changes by a factor of eight depending on the destination.

You apply through the consulate of the country where you’ll spend the most nights. If the nights are equal across countries, you apply through your first point of entry. This is a rule people get wrong on multi-country trips, and applying to the wrong consulate creates a problem before anyone assesses your finances at all.

Why Hitting the Official Minimum Is a Bad Strategy

The published figure is a floor, not a target. This distinction is where most refusals originate.

An account holding exactly the minimum for exactly the number of days requested reads to a consular officer as a calculated submission rather than genuine financial capacity. It suggests someone worked out what was needed and arranged to have it, which is precisely the impression that triggers scrutiny.

The practical guidance most experienced applicants follow is to hold meaningfully more than the published minimum, often 50 to 100% above it. For a ten-day trip to France at €120 per day, the official minimum is €1,200. An application showing €2,000 or more is in a considerably stronger position than one showing €1,210.

The figures also assume flights and accommodation are already paid for. The daily amount covers living costs once you arrive: food, local transport, activities. If your accommodation isn’t prepaid, some consulates expect the full accommodation cost demonstrated on top of the daily figure.

What Consular Officers Actually Read

Here’s the part that matters more than the number, and it’s the part most articles skip entirely.

Several Schengen consulates, including Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece and the Czech Republic, have moved from requesting three months of bank statements to six. That change tells you what they’re assessing. Six months of statements is not a check on whether you have enough money today. It’s a check on your financial pattern over time.

What they’re looking for: consistent income arriving on predictable dates, regular outgoing transactions that look like an actual person’s financial life, and a balance that has been stable or growing rather than one that materialised recently.

The single most reliable way to trigger a refusal is a large deposit landing shortly before the application. Even when the funds are entirely legitimate, a spike in an otherwise flat account reads as borrowed money arranged to satisfy the requirement. Officers see this constantly.

This produces a counterintuitive result that’s worth understanding: an applicant with a modest but genuinely stable balance is often in a stronger position than one whose account went from near-empty to comfortable three weeks before submitting.

Qatar-Specific Points

Your QID validity matters as much as your balance. A Qatar residence permit expiring shortly after your intended return weakens the entire application regardless of financial documentation, because it undermines the case that you’ll return to Qatar.

Your employment letter must agree with your statements. If the letter states one salary and the deposits show something different, that inconsistency does more damage than a lower balance would. Officers notice documents that contradict each other.

Mixed-nationality families need individual assessment. Financial documentation is assessed per applicant. A financially strong parent doesn’t automatically cover a dependent adult child unless the sponsorship is explicitly documented with the sponsor’s own statements.

Sponsorship rules vary by country. Spain, France and Italy generally require the sponsor’s bank statements plus a notarised declaration. Germany uses a formal sponsorship declaration called a Verpflichtungserklärung. The requirements aren’t interchangeable.

What Else Changed for 2026

The Schengen visa fee rose to €90, and a refused application forfeits the full amount. That raises the cost of getting the financial documentation wrong on the first attempt.

The Entry/Exit System is now in operation, and ETIAS is scheduled to launch in late 2026. ETIAS applies to travellers from visa-exempt countries, so it doesn’t replace the visa process for Qatar residents who need one, but it’s worth knowing the wider system is tightening rather than relaxing.

Travel insurance with minimum €30,000 medical coverage remains mandatory, valid for the full trip duration with no gaps, covering every Schengen country on the itinerary. Gaps in coverage dates are grounds for refusal independent of your financial position.

Why This Is Worth Getting Reviewed

The bank balance question looks like it should have a numerical answer, and applicants who treat it that way are the ones surprised by refusals.

What actually decides the outcome is whether the whole financial picture holds together: the right country’s threshold, comfortably exceeded rather than exactly met, supported by a statement pattern that looks like a real financial life, with an employment letter that agrees with it and a residence permit that supports the return-intent case.
