China Tour Package from Qatar: Best Cities, Itineraries and How to Book

Ask most Qatar-based families why they haven’t been to China yet and the answers are variations of the same few things. The visa situation sounds complicated. The flight sounds long. The language barrier sounds impenetrable. And somewhere in there, the assumption that it’s just not quite the right kind of holiday for a family with children.

None of these concerns are entirely wrong. But most of them are more manageable than they sound, and 2026 specifically has made the whole thing considerably easier than it was even two years ago.

Qatari passport holders enter China visa-free. No application, no embassy, no waiting. Just a valid passport and a hotel booking. That arrangement runs through December 2026 and covers stays up to 30 days, which is longer than most holidays need. For the expat majority in Qatar, the tourist visa through Doha’s Chinese Visa Application Center is a few days’ processing once the documents are in order. Not the ordeal people imagine.

The flight is eight hours to Beijing. That’s roughly the same as flying to London. People do that for a long weekend.

And then there’s Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter, which is one of the better arguments for the trip that nobody mentions in the brochures.

Start With Why Xi’an Changes the Conversation

Most people planning a China trip from Qatar focus on Beijing and the Great Wall, which is reasonable. But Xi’an is the city that tends to genuinely surprise visitors from the Gulf, and not for the reason they expect.

Yes, the Terracotta Army is extraordinary. Over 8,000 life-sized warriors buried since 210 BCE, still being excavated, the scale genuinely doesn’t register until you’re standing at the edge of the first pit looking down at them. That’s worth the trip to Xi’an on its own.

But the Muslim Quarter is the thing people come back talking about. It’s a long, noisy street lined with halal food stalls, hundreds of them, selling dumplings and flatbreads and skewers and noodles. For families from Qatar who have spent years navigating halal availability in various countries, the Muslim Quarter is a specific kind of relief. You don’t have to check anything. You just eat. And eat. The food is genuinely excellent, not just “acceptable for halal,” actually excellent.

Xi’an also has an ancient city wall that’s one of the most intact in China. You can rent a bicycle and do the full circuit in a couple of hours. The scale of it, walking on top of a wall that’s been standing for 600 years with the modern city visible on both sides, is the kind of thing that doesn’t fit neatly into a description.

Two days in Xi’an covers the Terracotta Army, the wall, and enough time in the Quarter to eat too much.

Beijing Is What Most People Came For

Three to four days. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and Wangfujing Street at night, which is chaotic and loud and completely alive in a way that the history sites aren’t.

One specific thing worth knowing about the Wall: which section matters. Badaling is closest to Beijing and most crowded. Mutianyu is 90 minutes further out, less crowded, has a cable car, and is considerably better for families. The extra drive is worth it.

The Forbidden City takes a full morning done properly. It’s larger than most people realise and the crowd management going through it in the wrong direction can turn a fascinating place into a stressful one. Going as early as possible, arriving at opening time, sorts this.

Shanghai Is the Contrast

Two to three days. More international in feel than Beijing, less obviously ancient, and dramatically different visually. The Bund at night, standing on the waterfront looking at the Pudong skyline across the river, is one of those views that’s been described many times and still doesn’t quite prepare you for it in person.

Yu Garden is worth half a morning. The French Concession neighbourhood is good for walking. At least one tower with a view.

Shanghai is the city where China starts feeling like it’s from the future rather than the past, which after Beijing and Xi’an creates a specific contrast that makes the whole trip feel more complete.

The Longer Trip Adds Pandas and Mountains

Ten days instead of seven opens up two more options worth knowing about.

Chengdu is where the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is. Morning is the time to go, before the pandas retreat into sleeping for the rest of the day, which they do enthusiastically and at length. Seeing a giant panda in person is both charming and mildly absurd in the best way. Chengdu also has excellent Sichuan food, which is a different culinary experience from anything in Beijing or Xi’an.

Guilin is the Li River. The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo passes through karst mountain scenery that looks like it was painted rather than grown, limestone peaks rising straight out of flat land with mist sitting in the valleys. It’s the kind of landscape that m

akes you understand why Chinese scroll paintings look the way they do. Half a day on the river, a bit of time in Yangshuo, done.

If the first trip is seven days, save Chengdu and Guilin for next time. If it’s ten, add one of them. Trying to fit all five cities into ten days is too much.

Flights and Getting Around

China Southern flies Doha to Guangzhou direct in about seven hours, the fastest connection into China from Doha. Qatar Airways covers Beijing and Shanghai routes. All roughly eight hours.

Inside China, the high-speed rail network is excellent and significantly underused by international visitors. Beijing to Xi’an is four and a half hours on the G-train. Beijing to Shanghai is similar. These trains are comfortable, the stations are usually central, and once airport time is factored in they’re often faster than domestic flights for these distances. For a Beijing-Xi’an-Shanghai circuit, the Xi’an leg as a train rather than a flight makes the itinerary flow better.

Chengdu and Guilin are further from the eastern corridor and internal flights make more sense for those legs.

When to Go

Spring and autumn. April to May, September to October. These windows give mild weather across Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, clearer skies than summer, and smaller crowds than the peak domestic tourism season.

The first week of October is China’s Golden Week holiday. Domestic tourism peaks dramatically and the major sites get crowded in ways that genuinely change the experience. Second half of October or early September instead.

For Qatar-based families, spring breaks sometimes align with the April-May window. Eid Al-Fitr in some years falls in this range, which makes the spring window work for a longer Eid holiday trip.

Three Practical Things

VPN before landing. Not in China, before. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Google Maps don’t function inside China’s internet environment. Downloading a VPN once inside is not straightforward. This catches people out more than any other aspect of China travel, and it affects navigation and communication from the moment of arrival.

Google Translate with the Chinese language pack downloaded offline. Pleco as a dictionary. Between them they handle most of what comes up when English isn’t available, which is frequently outside international hotels.

China is five hours ahead of Qatar. Factor this into any connecting flights and calls home.

The Visa Situation, Simply Put

Qatari nationals: visa-free for 30 days through December 2026. Passport, hotel booking, return ticket. Done.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi and most other expat nationalities: China tourist L Visa from the Chinese Visa Application Center in Doha. Passport, Qatar residence permit, hotel bookings, return flights, bank statements, photos. A few working days’ processing once submitted correctly.

Families with mixed passport nationalities run both processes in parallel before the trip. A travel agency managing the full booking handles both rather than the family coordinating across two separate channels.
